학교에서 막 돌아온 아이들을 자리에 앉혀 책을 읽게 하는 일은
쉬운 일이 아니지요. 전 아이들이 학교에서 돌아오면 간단하게
배를 채우게하고, 원하는 아이들을 거실에 불러모아 약 40분간
책을 읽게 합니다. 이때는 반강제적이지요.
아이들은 40분이 길다며, 시계를 10분 마다 쳐다봅니다.
한국책이라면 하루 종일도 읽겠다면서....투덜대지만 아주 예쁘게
책을 읽습니다.
어떤 때는 잠이 안온다며 READING CLUB하자고 책을 들고 제
침대로 찾아옵니다. 우린 아무말도 안하고 좁은 침대에 아무렇게나
꾸겨앉아 책을 읽기도 하지만, 때로는 책을 손에 든 채 시끄럽게
떠들기도 합니다. 전 아이들 덕분에 책장을 넘기게 됩니다.
감사하지요.
또, 반 강제적으로 하는 것이 또 하나 있지요.
일기를 매일 쓰는 겁니다. 저는 일기를 써오는 아이들에게는 QUATER을
하나씩 주지요. 아이들은 첨에는 그 25쎈트 동전 때문에 말을 안해도
잘도 써오지만 지금은 약발이 떨어져 가네요.
여러분의 자녀들에게 남겨줄수 있는 가장 큰 유산은
아이들에게 책읽는 습관을 갖게해 주는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.
책을 많이 읽는 아이들은 이해력이나 창의력, 종합.추리력등이 좋아
학습에도 물론 많은 도움이 되지요. 또한 책은 지식을 습득할 수 있는
도구로서의 중요한 역할도 하지만, 무엇보다도 자녀들의 긴 인생을
생각해 볼 때, 우리들의 소중한 자녀들에게.
1. 혼자서 배움을 접할 수 있는 능력을,
2. 인생의 친구를 만날 수 있는 기회를,
3. 사고가 정체되지 않고 끊임없이 세계로 마음을 열 수 있는 활력을,
4. 마음의 평정을
선사하지 않나요?

Find new stories to read with your children every week.
Give your time to read aloud to a child.
Have a child read a book to you.
International Literacy Day is held on September 8 every year.
Celabrate the day by picking up a book and reading to a child.

Keep teens reading. Give them books, newspaper articles and magazines about things
that interest them-music, movies, TV and computers.
Let chldren count out the change when makng a purchase.
Reinforce the importance of math in everyday life!
Make every day a learning day. Ask your children to make a shopping list, read recipes
together or help them make a calendar of their weekly activities.
Newborns benefit from reading too!
Organize a children ‘s book club with friends in your neighbourhood.
Pick one night a week to make a regular visit to the library.
Quiet, cozy reading spaces are good places for your child to read independently.
Remember that children learn by example- if you recognize the importance of reading,
your children will too!
Start early! It’s never too early to read to your children.
Treat a child to a story a day.
Use reading time to create a special bond with a child.
Volunteer your time. Family literacy groups in your community could use your help
with tutoring adults, reading to children and helping out with administrative tasks.
Write a letter.
X-ercise your mind! Reading ability is like a muscle, if you don’t exercise it often,
you will not maintain the same level of reading ability as you get older. So-“use
it or lose it!”
You are the key to improving a child’s reading ability by placing a high priority on reading in your home.
Zap off the TV-pick up a book instead!
