POINTS OF INTEREST:
6-years before Thomas Edison's first incandescent lamp, Davis House on Main Street in Winnipeg surprised many by lighting the front of his business with an electric arc light, an invention that gave off far more light than the gas lamp across the street.
This revolutionary invention led to the construction of the Pinawa Generating Station between 1903 and 1906 to serve the rest of Winnipeg's electrical needs. If fact, it was Manitoba's first year-round producer of electrical power.
Prior to its construction, their were no roads, no bridges across the Winnipeg River nor railway lines into the site. As a result, machinery and methods to construct the dam consisted of men and 75 teams of horses.
In 1951, the power plant shut down to flow into Seven Sisters Dam, but many years later, the Pinawa Trails Group selected a number of volunteers to build the Pinawa Suspension bridge, which was considered a “Labor of Love”, which was completed in 1998.
