TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

Where: Various venues

When: June 16-19

What's going on: While the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is in town gathering stories about the treatment of residential school survivors, a four-day festival will take place with free concerts at the Forks on June 16 and 18, film screenings, plays and other cultural showcases.

Performers: Blue Rodeo, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Susan Aglukark, Joey Stylez, Ray St. Germain, Chic Gamine and more.

Tickets: All events are free.

MANITOBA ELECTRONIC MUSIC EXHIBITION (MEME)

Where: Various downtown venues, Old Market Square

When: June 17-20

What's going on: The first annual MEME is hosting more than 60 different artists specializing in electronic music from around the world, along with video installation and workshops. During the festival, the new stage at Old Market Square will be unveiled and put to the test during a free show on June 19.

Performers: Mike Monday, Billy Dalessandro, Voodeux, Pezzner, Noah Pred, Mike Gervais, Dubmatix and more.

Passes: $40 at Kustom Kulture.

RED RIVER EXHIBITION

Where: Exhibition Park

When: June 18-27

What's going on: The city's largest annual carnival with a midway, games of chance, agricultural exhibitions, on-site parades, fireworks, talent competitions, stunt dogs, shark exhibit, Prairie Town Adventures, creative arts extravaganza and mini-doughnuts.

Performers: Default, State of Shock, Rik Emmett, Lighthouse, Aaron Pritchett, Aaron Lines, Jaydee Bixby and more.

Tickets: Concerts free with $10 gate admission.

WSO INDIGENOUS FESTIVAL

Where: Various venues

When: June 21-24

What's going on: The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra teams up with aboriginal musician, dancers and storytellers to put a new spin on traditional music.

Performers: Don Amero, Digging Roots, Shy-Anne Hovorka, Eagle & Hawk, Waking Wolf, Viva Brasil and more.

WINNIPEG INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

Where: Various downtown locations

When: June 25-July 4

What's going on: All the jazz you can handle, along with blues, hip-hop, pop, soul, electronic, R&B, roots and indie rock. One of the most diverse musical events of the year.

Performers: Legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins (pre-fest June 23); Martha Wainwright singing Edith Piaf; hip-hop fusionists the Roots; turntablist Kid Koala's rock project the Slew; trumpeter Roy Hargrove; Grammy winner Terence Blanchard; and more.

Tickets: $10 to $75 at Ticketmaster and Jazz Fest office, 989-4656. Noon-hour and three-day closing weekend concerts (July 2-4) free at Old Market Square.

DAUPHIN'S COUNTRYFEST

Where: Selo Ukrania Site, 10 km south of Dauphin

When: July 1-4

What's going on: One of Canada's longest-running country music events and one of the province's largest and most popular music festival. All 13,000 weekend passes sold out in less than 12 hours after going on sale three months ago, before the full lineup was even announced.

Performers: Brooks & Dunn, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Kellie Pickler, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Shane Yellowbird, Corb Lund, Terri Clark and more.

Passes: Four-day passes and camping sites sold out. There are still some Thursday, Saturday and Sunday tickets available for $75 and $85 at 1-800-361-7300.

WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL

Where: Birds Hill Park

When: July 7-11

What's going on: An eclectic lineup of more than 80 solo artists and bands from around the globe, covering a multitude of genres from traditional folk to country, roots, gospel, world, reggae, Celtic, pop and alt-rock.

Performers: Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Cliff, the Levon Helm Band, John Hiatt, Avett Brothers, Swell Season, Arrested Development, Oscar Brand, Gord Downie, Andrew Bird and more.

Passes: $209 for adults, $134 for youths and seniors, $45 for children aged 13 and 14 and $10.50 for children under $12. Five day passes with quiet camping is $231. Regular festival camping is sold out. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster and the Folk Festival Music Store.

WINNIPEG FRINGE FESTIVAL

When: July 14-25

Where: Various downtown locations

What's going on: One of North America's largest fringe theatre festivals, run by the Manitoba Theatre Centre, based in and around Old Market Square. This year's theme is the sci-fi/Star Trek-based Fringe and Beyond, so practise your William Shatner impersonations.

Performers: More than 125 companies from across the globe perform everything from absurdist comedy to dark dramas to avant-garde works to surreal head-scratchers. Plus dozens of musicians, jugglers, jokers and jesters ham it up at Old Market Square's free stage.

Tickets: Individual tickets are $5 to $9. A $69 Frequent Fringer pass will get you into 10 shows. A $95 buddy pass is good for 14 shows. Special children's programming during the day is free. Tickets are available at MTC patron services, 942-6537.

BRANDON FOLK MUSIC AND ART FESTIVAL

When: July 23-25

Where: Keystone Centre Grounds, Brandon

What's going on: The smaller cousin of the Winnipeg Folk Festival with more than 20 artists.

Performers: Buffy Sainte-Marie, Don Amero, Oh My Darling, Nathan, Tarran the Tailor, Son Latino Band, NQ Arbuckle, Joey Only and more.

Passes: $40 for adults, $30 for students and seniors, children under 12 free. Camping $25. Tickets available at Folk Festival Music Store, the Neighbourhood Bookstore and Cafe.

ROCKIN' THE FIELDS OF MINNEDOSA

When: July 29-Aug. 1

Where: Lake Minnedosa

What's going on: Rock festival on the former Classic Rock Weekend site run by a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping alive the tradition of celebrating August long weekend with fist-pumping RNR.

Performers: Helix, Bif Naked, Glass Tiger, the Kings, Northern Pikes, Mudmen and more.

Passes: Weekend passes $135, day passes $55 at 1-888-330-8333. Camping is $50.

ISLENDINGADAGURINN

When: July 30 - Aug. 2

Where: Gimli

What's going on: A celebration of Icelandic culture with a viking village encampment, midway, film festival, parade, dance, craft vendors, fireworks, sand-castle-building contest, pizza-eating contest, beach volleyball, art show, alternative folk festival and Rock the Dock. Wearing historically inaccurate plastic helmets with horns strongly encouraged.

Performers: Without a Trace, Ron Halldorson, Gilles Fournier, Richard Moody, Grew Lowe, Valdine Anderson, Grafarvogur Choir, Vitaminsforyou, Ohbijou and more.

Tickets: Most events are free.

ARSONFEST

When: Aug. 6-8

Where: Rudolph Rocker Cultural Centre

What's going on: Three-day punk, hardcore and extreme metal festival with all proceeds donated to local charities.

Performers: Big Trouble in Little China, Hard Charger, War Hero, Mares of Thrace, Ken Mode, Archagathus, Six Brew Bantha and more.

Tickets: Admission $12 a day.

FOLKLORAMA

When: Aug. 1-14

Where: Various schools, community centres and ethno-cultural clubs throughout the city.

What's going on: The largest and oldest multicultural event of its kind, with more than 40 different associations showcasing music, costumes, dances, food and liquor from around the world.

Performers: Each pavilion features as assortment of entertainment, from musicians to contortionists to traditional dancers skilled at various high kicks.

Tickets: $6 per pavilion; 12-ticket family passes $54, VIP World Tour $69.95.
