The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has announced its new assistant conductor.
Richard Lee, currently assistant at the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, has been hired as of September to take over from the outgoing Rei Hotoda.
Lee has been given the title of resident conductor, which is said to be a higher rank than assistant in the arcane world of classical music.
"I’m still second in command, but it implies a more collegial relationship," said Lee, 38, who also worked for the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
WSO music director Alexander Mickelthwate invited six applicants, including four Americans, to audition for the post. He has signed Lee to a two-year contract with a possible extension.
"I am thrilled to have a conductor come on board who has such extensive and varied experience," Mickelthwate said in a statement.
"Everyone, including the orchestra members, is very excited about this decision."
Mickelthwate says Lee will conduct a variety of concerts next season, including several Pops and Sundays with the Family series performances.
Lee will also participate in education and outreach programs throughout Manitoba. His appointment includes a teaching post at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Music.
